Messaging (SMS / MMS / WhatsApp)

Messaging (SMS, MMS, WhatsApp)

The Messaging API is the fastest way to reach users on a phone — a single CreateMessage call delivers an SMS, MMS, or WhatsApp message anywhere Twilio supports.

Time to first call: ~60 seconds. Have your Account SID + Auth Token? Skip to Quickstart.

Core Concepts

From / To

From is your Twilio phone number (or messaging service SID). To is the recipient in E.164 format — e.g. +14155551234.

Body & Media

Body is up to 1600 characters of text. Attach images, GIFs, or other media via MediaUrl to send an MMS.

Status Callbacks

Set StatusCallback to receive delivery updates (queued → sent → delivered / failed) at your webhook endpoint.

Trial Restrictions

Trial accounts can only send to phone numbers verified in the Twilio Console. Upgrade to remove the limit.

Send Your First Message

Minimal request

const accountSid = process.env.TWILIO_ACCOUNT_SID!;
const to         = '+14155551234';
const from       = '+15005550006';
const body       = 'Your verification code is 123456';

const response = await client.smsApi.createMessage(
  accountSid, to,
  undefined, undefined, undefined, undefined, undefined, undefined, undefined,
  undefined, undefined, undefined, undefined, undefined, undefined, undefined,
  undefined, undefined, undefined, undefined,
  from, undefined, body,
);
